In a strategic move to maintain its dominance in the search market, Google has unveiled significant updates to its Search product during its annual I/O conference held in California. As emerging companies like OpenAI and Perplexity work to challenge Google’s supremacy, the tech giant is introducing innovative AI capabilities to enhance user experience.

Google’s ChatGPT competitor, AI Mode, is now available to all US users. This feature, which was previously accessible only in Google’s Labs test mode, is set to revolutionize the traditional search experience. AI Mode will be integrated into the standard Google Search page, alongside other tabs such as Images, Videos, and News.

AI Mode distinguishes itself by employing Google’s frontier models and utilizing a technique known as “query fan-out.” This method breaks down user queries into smaller subtopics and conducts multiple searches simultaneously. According to Google, this allows AI Mode to perform more in-depth searches compared to traditional methods.

Instead of delivering a classic list of blue links, AI Mode engages users in a conversational manner, offering a more interactive search experience. It also features a Deep Search option, which executes hundreds of smaller searches, providing users with comprehensive and detailed results. This capability enables the generation of expert-level, fully-cited reports in just minutes, significantly reducing research time.

Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product for search, has stated that the same models powering AI Mode will also enhance AI Overviews. These overviews are prominently displayed at the top of standard Google Search results, similar to images or videos. This integration aims to deliver the most helpful responses across Google’s platforms, including AI, Images, Finance, and Maps.

AI Overviews have already garnered 1.5 billion monthly users and are available in 200 countries and territories in 40 languages. Stein noted the evolving nature of user queries, with a 10% increase in complex questions in major markets like the US and India. This shift represents the largest search launch of the decade.

As Alphabet Inc.’s (GOOG) stock fluctuates, closing at $165.32 and seeing a slight increase in after-hours trading, the company remains committed to enhancing its search product amid intensifying competition. Google’s latest innovations underscore its dedication to providing users with cutting-edge technology and comprehensive search capabilities.
