In recognition of National Homeownership Month, the Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) and Iowa REALTORS® have launched two statewide initiatives aimed at promoting the importance of homeownership across Iowa. These initiatives are designed to support both prospective homeowners and industry professionals, highlighting the significant role that homeownership plays in economic stability and community development.

Iowa’s high homeownership rate, currently standing at an impressive 71.5%, is a testament to the state’s commitment to making homeownership accessible to more residents. IFA Director Debi Durham emphasized the dual benefits of homeownership, stating, “Homeownership not only empowers families to build generational wealth and achieve financial stability, but it is also an economic catalyst, with home sales spurring additional investments in our communities.”

Gavin Blair, CEO of Iowa REALTORS®, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Iowa as one of the most affordable states for purchasing a home. He reiterated the organization’s commitment to ensuring that more Iowans can experience the pride and security associated with owning a home.

Meaning of Homeownership Contest

The Meaning of Homeownership contest invites Iowans who have not yet owned a home to share their personal reflections on what homeownership would mean to them. Participants are encouraged to submit a short written piece and a photo that encapsulates their dream of homeownership. Up to five winners will receive a $1,000 gift card and will be connected with valuable resources, educational tools, and programs to help make their homeownership dreams a reality. Entries will be judged based on creativity, thoughtfulness, clarity of homeownership aspirations, and the quality of the accompanying photo.

Iowa Homeownership Incubator

For housing professionals, the IFA and Iowa REALTORS® are promoting the Homeownership Incubator Pitch Competition. Now in its fourth year, this competition challenges lending institutions, real estate brokerages, and housing organizations to propose innovative ideas that advance financial literacy and awareness of homeownership assistance programs, particularly those aimed at supporting low- to moderate-income Iowans.

Proposals must include partnerships with community or business organizations and should demonstrate creativity and potential impact. Finalists will have the opportunity to present their ideas live at the HousingIowa Conference in Cedar Rapids on September 3. The winning team will receive $20,000 to bring their vision to fruition.

Submissions for both initiatives are due by 5:00 p.m. CDT on August 1, 2025. More information and entry details can be found at iowafinance.com/homeownership.
