Carroll College Welcomes Back James Carney as CFO
HELENA, MT — Carroll College has officially announced that James (Jim) Carney will assume the role of Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer starting September 8, 2025. Carney’s appointment marks a return to the institution where he previously contributed as Assistant Director for Community Living and as an adjunct faculty member. His homecoming reflects a full-circle moment in a career characterized by mission-driven leadership and service.
“We are excited to welcome Jim Carney back to Carroll,” said Dr. Jennifer Glowienka, co-president of Carroll College. “His extensive financial leadership experience, coupled with his deep familiarity with our campus community, will be an invaluable asset as we look ahead to the college’s future and uphold our mission.”
Proven Financial Leadership and Strategic Direction
Carney brings more than 17 years of progressive experience in financial leadership. Throughout his career, he has developed a strong reputation for effective budgeting, resource management, strategic restructuring, and innovative problem-solving. His professional journey includes a decade-long tenure as Chief Financial Officer for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena, where he was promoted to Chancellor in 2022.
In these roles, Carney oversaw comprehensive financial operations, introduced modern management systems, and acquired broad expertise in areas such as IT, risk management, insurance, investment portfolios, real estate, and construction oversight.
Prior to his work with the Diocese, Carney held leadership positions within the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, contributed to nonprofit initiatives, and gained corporate accounting experience. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guizhou, China—an experience that helped shape his global perspective and commitment to service.

Carney is widely recognized for cultivating positive, cooperative team environments that promote trust and shared accountability. His leadership philosophy emphasizes aligning financial strategy with institutional mission, ensuring both transparency and long-term sustainability.
Throughout the search and selection process, Carney stood out for his thoughtful insights, mission-driven approach, and collaborative mindset. “I’m truly honored to return to the Carroll community,” Carney shared. “This institution holds a special place in my heart, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy of academic excellence and community impact. I look forward to working alongside talented colleagues to steward the college’s financial future and support its mission of shaping the minds and hearts of tomorrow’s leaders.”
A Background in Service and Education
Carney holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Seattle University and a Master of Arts in Public Service from Marquette University. His academic and professional paths reflect a lifelong dedication to public service, ethical leadership, and educational advancement.
He will assume the role currently held by Lori Peterson ’87, who is retiring after an impressive 32-year tenure at Carroll College. Peterson has served as Chief Financial Officer for the past 15 years, overseeing numerous financial milestones and contributing substantially to the college’s fiscal health and strategic planning.
“We are deeply grateful to Lori for her decades of service and leadership,” said Dr. Glowienka. “Her legacy will continue to inspire the entire Carroll community.”
Looking Ahead to a Strong Financial Future
Carney’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Carroll College as the institution continues to evolve within a shifting higher education landscape. His expertise in building financially resilient organizations and leading with integrity and vision is expected to guide Carroll through the coming years with confidence and clarity.
As the college prepares for this leadership transition, stakeholders across campus are optimistic about the future. Carney’s return signals not only a reconnection with Carroll’s values but also a strategic move toward sustainable growth and innovation in the years to come.
