Jack Edlin Earns National Recognition
Grand Canyon University (GCU) senior Jack Edlin has made history as the first student from the university to earn the prestigious Schwab Advisor Services 2025 RIATA student scholarship. The award, part of the Registered Investment Advisor Talent Advantage program, was granted to only 15 students nationwide from a pool of over 600 applicants representing more than 60 universities.
Edlin, a finance major with a focus on financial planning, was shocked but grateful when he heard the news. “To be honest, I wasn’t expecting it,” he said. “But I’m very grateful for it.”
A Journey of Discovery and Growth
Edlin’s academic path at GCU wasn’t a straight one. Initially hesitant about attending a Christian university, he enrolled at GCU as a nursing major. However, a shift in interest led him to entrepreneurship before he ultimately discovered his passion for financial planning. His early fascination with finance began during his childhood in Las Vegas, where he sold lemonade and traded stocks with his grandfather at dawn.
“I used to hold a sign that said, ‘I want to buy a share of Amazon stock’ instead of just asking for a dollar for lemonade,” Edlin recalled. That entrepreneurial spirit translated into a deep interest in financial markets, investments, and long-term planning.
GCU’s Role in Edlin’s Success
Edlin credits the Colangelo College of Business and its faculty for nurturing his interest and guiding his journey. In particular, he highlighted the role of Dr. Joy Clady, chair of the finance department, who not only taught one of his favorite classes—Finance 375: Introduction to Investments—but also wrote his letter of recommendation for the scholarship.
“You learn everything about the market and dive into details, from estate planning to a whole range of topics,” said Edlin, who is currently enrolled in a taxation course. Through his involvement with the Finance and Economics Club, Edlin made meaningful connections with industry professionals, including representatives from Schwab.
Standing Out Among the Best
Edlin’s achievement is especially notable given the caliber of the competition. Other recipients of the scholarship hail from institutions like the University of Texas, Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State, and Indiana University. “That was the most rewarding thing for me,” said Edlin. “I’m honored to represent GCU because I love it here and couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”
Dean John Kaites of the Colangelo College of Business praised Edlin’s dedication and the quality of GCU’s finance program. “I think we have one of the very best finance programs,” Kaites said. “Our ability to teach students how markets work, how to care about customers, and how to be teachable along the way is what Jack exemplifies.”
Beyond the Classroom
In addition to the $15,000 scholarship, the RIATA program offers mentorship with leaders from independent Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), providing students like Edlin with hands-on industry experience and career guidance. This mentorship component is especially valuable as Edlin eyes certification as a financial planner. GCU’s curriculum already includes the coursework required for Certified Financial Planner (CFP) eligibility, and the RIATA program contributes hours toward that designation.
Edlin has also passed the Security Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, further reflecting his commitment to a career in finance. Last summer, he worked at a bank in Cape Cod by day, a restaurant by night, and a yacht club on weekends—leaving little time for his favorite hobby: fishing.
“I just love to keep pursuing whatever plan God has for my life and represent Him through it all,” said Edlin, who lived with his grandparents during that summer.
Campus Leadership and Future Goals
Edlin’s contributions extend beyond academics. He has served as director of finance and now vice president for TEDxGrandCanyonUniversity, where he helps organize events and promote the sharing of innovative ideas. “I’m really excited to help out and continue the vision here at GCU,” he said.
As he begins his senior year, Edlin is optimistic about the future. The scholarship has eased financial burdens and opened doors to new professional connections. “That’s one of the main plans right now,” he said. “I’m really excited to see what opportunities lie ahead.”
